The girl’s basketball team has had three games so far and is constantly improving. All except three of the girls on the team are returning varsity members and have been playing together for at least two or three years. Though they are quite comfortable playing with each other by now, there is a very important new member to the team this year: their head coach, Christine Gutierrez.
Gutierrez played basketball all four years of high school and one year for the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee before moving on to coaching. Just last year she was assistant coach under head coach Matt Stuve. Throughout the summer she coached an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team. “I’m really not doing much differently than Stuve as far as physical coaching. Right now I’m trying to give the girls the confidence they need to be successful. My goals don’t revolve around what our record looks like and the girls know that. I want to see is improvement each game and hopefully we’ll be able to play a full game together because although we have been improving, we have not been able to do that yet,” said Gutierrez. “Even though our record may not show it yet, we are improving every game and if we keep it up we’re going to be successful,” said Gabriella Nassif, senior captain. “Unlike past teams, I feel like this team can really work together. On the court all of us rely on each other and know that there is always going to be someone there if we’re in trouble with the ball. We have some very skilled players, but there isn’t a single person that we depend on more than any other and I think that’s really important in creating a successful team.” “Christine really pushes us to our limit and makes us want to be better. We’re always working hard during practice and it shows in the games,” said Elizabeth Weston, senior captain. They are looking forward to a season full of improvements and an experienced team along with a new coach with fresh aspirations couldn’t be a better combination to make all of their potential into success.
