The 2007 season for the Green Bay Packers has been a good, competitive drive thus far. The record for the Packers is 11-2 and Brett Favre was named “Sportsman of the Year,” in the Sports Illustrated latest issue. On November 29, 2007, Packers played a dogfight game against the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas, Texas. Brett Favre has never won in Dallas before and for this game, two strong defenders were injured. Charles Woodson was out with a toe injury and Kabeer Gbaja- Biamala was still recovering from an ankle and knee injury. Jarrett Bush replaced Woodson, but was no match against Dallas. Al Harris doesn’t work well in spatial covering and Terrell Owens was bigger, faster, and stronger, so Harris was outdone. Favre’s game plan wasn’t smart, with all 60 plus yard throws and gave no chance to short passing or running games with Green Bay’s strong five wide offensive set.
In the Packers’ games before Dallas, Donald Driver, Ryan Grant, Donald Lee, James Jones and Greg Jennings were the unstoppable offense with strong runs and short passing game. This was not something that the Packers showed against Dallas until Aaron Rodgers took over for Favre. You could almost hear the gasps from the Wisconsin homes as they saw Brett Favre holding his elbow on the ground. As Favre walked off the field worried fans watched Rodgers step on the field. With Rodger’s great work, it’s easy to see the Packers bright future! Rodgers continued the Packers’ successful short passing and hand off game, bringing the score seven points from Dallas before the half. The rest of the game, Favre sat out and Rodgers played strong. Even though it wasn’t enough to beat Dallas, the Packers will play Dallas again. The team re-signed Craig Nall as a third string quarterback and back-up to Rodgers. Packers took the National Football Conference North title advancing them to the playoffs when the game on Sunday, December 12 at noon against the Oakland Raiders sealed the deal. Favre recovered from his injury and played a great game against the Oakland Raiders with a triumph of 38-7 in an eighteen degree chill at Lambeau Field. Favre played his old game plan, using his great offense to his advantage. The Packers rocked the Raiders with 29 runs for 156 yards from running back Ryan Grant. Will Blackmon stood out with a very impressive touchdown on a punt return and a fumble recovery in the endzone. Although it is said he steped out of bounds at the 5 yard line, Oakland didn’t challenge this and there were great plays by Jennings and Lee. Favre is only 183 passing yards from Dan Marino's league record of 61,361. Go pack go! Web-only Update: On Sunday, December 16, packers played the St. Louis Rams in St. Louis. The Packers hammered the St. Louis Rams with a win of 33 to 14. The definite highlight of the game was when Brett Favre broke Dan Marino's league record of passing yards after throwing to Driver in the fourth quarter. Favre holds the new record thus far with 61, 405 yards and still passing. 38 year old Favre is now the NFL's all time leader in passing yards! Greg Jennings and Donald Lee scored early along with Grant for touchdowns in the first half and Jennings's had a 44 yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Also, packer's kicker, Mason Crosby, was four for four on his kicks from 46, 25, 50 and 44 yards away. Driver led the team with 80 receiving yards and Kampman, Hawk and Barnett sacked Rams QB Bulger 4 times combined! Another highlight of the day was when the Eagles beat Dallas at home. Packers and Dallas are tied for a 12-2 record for the season. For Packers, this is tied for the second best record in the NFL. Another Accomplishment is the Packers are sending four players to the Pro Bowl - Brett Favre, defensive end Aaron Kampman, wide receiver Donald Driver, and corner back Al Harris. GO PACK GO!! Packers are closer to the Superbowl than they have ever been in the last decade! CONGRATS TO FAVRE!! FIVE RECORDS SET! Look for more updates after the game Sunday, December 30, against DETROIT!
