Seven teachers will be retiring this year, the majority of whom currently teach at Atwater Elementary School. Only two teachers from the high school will receive retirement benefits: Dorothy Shasko, a social studies teacher, and William Poznanski, a science teacher who retired earlier this year.

At Atwater, there are five teachers: Jane Lessac, a junior kindergarten teacher, Sue Borkon, who teaches sixth grade, Ruth Hoenick, who is an English Language Learners teacher for grades four through six, Nancy Behrens, who teaches first grade, and Peg Lightner, a third grade teacher.

According to Blane McCann, superintendent, the district will try to maintain the positions, and he anticipates that most, if not all, will be filled.

The physical education department bought a Nintendo Wii game system with money it received from a grant from the Supporters of Excellence in Educational Development (SEED) Foundation. The Wii, which generally costs $250, will most likely be introduced as an option for physical education classes on cardiovascular workout days.

Linda Knutson, the Integrated Health teacher, said that for the next two weeks “we’re trying it out. It’s to give people options instead of doing traditional games.”

Chosen principal candidate declines (includes web-only content) PDF Print E-mail

For the second time in five months, the candidate chosen for SHS principal has decided not to take the job at this time.
Melissa Thompson, assistant principal at Waukesha South High School, would have been the new principal but changed her mind to finish research for her dissertation.
Thompson, who applied for the job in October, said she didn’t want to have to be gone for three weeks at the beginning of her new job to do her research, which she didn’t know she would have to do when she applied. She and Shorewood Schools Superintendent Blane McCann couldn’t come to an agreement about the timeframe, she added, but did agree that it wasn’t the right time for her to start as principal.
“I’m a little disappointed but I don’t want to hire someone just to hire someone,” said McCann. “Sometimes the face of the school district is seen in the face of the high school principal.”
